Prof. Ibrahim obtained his B.Eng. (Hons) degree in Chemical Engineering from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 1987. His Masters and PhD degrees are in Process Integration from UMIST, Manchester, United Kingdom in 1991 and 1995 respectively. After completing his PhD in 1995, he started his career as a Senior Lecturer in Process System Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) until 1997. In 1997, he joined the Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) as a Senior Lecturer and was later promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and Professor in 2014 respectively. Prof. Ibrahim is also a Fellow of IChemE UK and recognised as a Chartered Engineer by the UK Engineering Council. Recently, he obtained recognition as a Professional Technologist in the area of Chemical Technology from the Malaysian Board of Technologists.
As an active researcher, he has published over 100 journal papers with an H-index of 18 and has won numerous awards including the Best Green Invention at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2015.
At UTP, Prof. Ibrahim has held several senior management positions. In 2000, he was appointed as the Director of Research, Development and Consultancy in UTP and played a key role in the development and implementation of the R&D and Consultancy Master Plan for the university. He was later appointed to lead the PETRONAS Ionic Liquids Centre and spearheaded research in Ionic Liquids Apllication. He was also highly instrumental in the formation of the UTP Transformation Plan aimed at developing UTP into a globally recognized research university.
In July 2013, he was appointed as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and assumed the management position of Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic in April 2016.
He took office as the fourth Vice Chancellor of UTP on 16 May 2018.
